First Impressions: Calum Roberts

Starting work somewhere new can be daunting, but here at Global Personals we’re a welcoming bunch. This week, B2C Junior Web Developer, Calum Roberts, gives his first impressions of the company…

This time last year, I found myself out of university with a degree in Business IT, wondering about my future prospects. I was also hoping that I wouldn’t have to move back home to Wales to let a great four years go to waste. Little did I know that within a few months I would be working for a dating company in Windsor, in my ideal role as a Web Developer in a B2C team.

I had less than four weeks to familiarise myself with Windsor and the surrounding area (other than my one known fact that it was home to Legoland), along with gathering further information about Global Personals, my future employer. Not the greatest amount of time! However, with the desire and ambition to kick start my career in a company that’s going places, time wasn’t really an issue. Although there were some other small issues that had to be dealt with first; finding a house and planning my travel to and from work was a big priority. Nonetheless, I was ecstatic to be moving and I’d be saving 5p in shopping bag charges (yup, they charge for them in Wales).

Global Personals were extremely helpful, especially when it came to finding a place to live and sorting travel and parking issues. They provided a list of the best possible places to live and park, as well as making suggestions on the most efficient routes to take. With a little luck, as it had just come up for rent, I settled on a place in Martin’s Heron, just outside of Bracknell and only around 8 miles from Windsor; the ideal place to find. Having The Great Park scenery, with the castle in the distance on my route into Windsor isn’t a bad bonus either (even in the mad morning traffic).

I had expected the first couple of months to focus majorly on finding my feet but, in only my second month with the company, I already feel like my feet are firmly on the ground and I’m starting to build up some confidence and reliability in my role. This has been largely due to the welcoming atmosphere the company has given me, along with the great teaching I’ve received within my team.

I love the environment and relaxed atmosphere around the office. Work flows much better when the place you’re working in is somewhere you enjoy coming to everyday. The work itself is quite exciting, with a variety of projects that inevitably will help to evolve my skills. The projects provide many challenges but all are welcome, as I’m learning new and better ways of approaching them. I’m certainly looking forward to all future work involving all of these wonderful and interesting dating sites – it is indeed a great time to be single!
