Hiring at London’s Silicon Milkroundabout fair
Last weekend Global Personals exhibited at the third Silicon Milkroundabout recruitment fair in East London’s Old Truman Brewery, speaking to over 250 developers and user experience designers who had chosen to shun the spring heatwave to meet the cream of London’s startup community.
With over 100 other attending companies ranging from Twitter, Mozilla, Last.fm and Wonga right through to two-person startups, Silicon Milkroundabout has become the leading technology recruitment event in the capital, styling itself as the alternative milkround for those seeking a job in London outside corporates.
Since opening our new London office in March the Waterloo arm of our development team has grown to eight staff and we believe that now being able to offer opportunities in the heart of London’s burgeoning tech scene gives us a major advantage when hiring. The event was the first time we could talk to candidates and offer roles with a London location.
So for the third Silicon Milkroundabout event we invested in an impressive 4m high stand with built-in screen and lighting to give us maximum presence.
Over the weekend organisers Songkick compered a ‘lightning pitch’ presentation stage in which each company had one minute to pitch themselves to the watching audience. And alongside the stands, the event also hosted a free bar – appropriate given the venue’s brewery origins and welcome given the heat – plus free coffee and a fruit stall.
User experience designer, Gavin, was interviewed on the event’s YouTube channel during the first day:
There was a good breadth in technologies and job roles represented over the two days. Compared to previous events there was a rise in the number of product managers and also in engineers specialising in more focused areas such as machine learning. A slight grumble was that genuine user experience people were in short supply but overall we took away plenty of leads to follow up, making the weekend worthwhile.
Targeting eight hires to add to the 35-strong development team we now begin sifting through CVs and emails to set up interviews with candidates. If you spoke to us during the event (or if you didn’t and are interested in our open positions) please get in touch at jobs@globalpersonals.co.uk
