We’ve been in the speed dating industry since 2003 and themed or activity based dating events are certainly becoming more popular. In 2011 out of 2038 singles events listed on our site, 29% are themed dating events with 71% being traditional speed dating.

Where did those 8 years go, from the initial idea and brave funding, to today”s enormously successful company.

Thank you for your comment. I agree; it is very sad to hear that people give up so much money to these fraudsters, sometimes even their life savings. I strongly believe that scammers target certain age groups online, men and women who they know will be more vulnerable. They build up relationships very quickly with these members, and sometimes their loneliness can get the better of them and they get caught up in it all.

That is why moderating every member’s first messages works so well. It creates a massive barrier which scammers rarely overcome. Its great knowing that having an in-house moderation team allows our members a safe environment to meet potential companions.

It is a sad fact that otherwise intelligent and aware people still fall into this trap.

Perhaps it has something to do with the perceived intimacy of the messaging back and forth. I wrote about this on my blog in July 2010 after a woman was conned out of £60,000 over a period of a few months.
